Shibori Workshop

SHIBORI CMYK-2

MAKE IT!

Textiles workshop at the MakerHive KT

Shibori is the Japanese art of stitched and bound resist textiles. It is a slow and meditative craft, often requiring many hours of binding, stitching and pulling up of threads, followed by multiple dyeing processes. This and the variations in tension and pressure applied in construction mean that every piece produced is unique.

Join us at the Make Hive in Kennedy Town to learn how to set up an Indigo vat and take home two products of your choice. The class is suitable for those with or without experience.

You will be taught a range of traditional Japanese Shibori patterns, which can be modified to suit your own product. Experiment using stitch, bound and clamped resist techniques to create intricate patterns and textures on scarves, table linens or clothing. We encourage you to consider both new and vintage textiles, perhaps sourcing beautiful old kimono silk from Japan and vintage or modern clothes from Hong Kong.

On completion of the class participants will confidently be able to:

– Have an understanding of key binding techniques and stitches used in Shibori

– Tie a ‘Kamosage’ knot, used in most bound Shibori work

– Understand the application of key stitches to achieve beautiful traditional Japanese surface patterns:

  • Running Stitch, Ori Nui and Maki-Nui
  • Itajime shibori (known as the shape-resist technique)
  • Kanoko (dots of a fawn)
  • Kumo (spiderweb)
  • Arashi (storm)
  • Maki-age (stitched motifs)
  • Kumo (pleat and bind technique)
  • Karamatsu (larch pattern)
  • Mokume (wood grain)

+ a few experimental techniques! Accidents can be happy ones in textiles…

– Understand the rich history behind this Japanese manual resist dyeing technique

  • Set up an indigo dye bath
  • Learn and apply resist techniques through stitch and binding

– Unpick your finished work to reveal your surface pattern designs

YOU WILL NEED:

Bring along some small textile articles to upcycle, eg 100% white cotton napkins, t-towel, t-shirt, pillow case ( NB: fabrics must be natural fibres, cotton or linen are ideal and must have been washed and dried in advance of the workshop. The fabrics can have a slight print on, which will get over dyed) We will also provide some fabric that you can use if you don’t have anything of your own you’d like to Shibori!

We will provide all equipment and a set of process notes. Students need to wear old clothing and/or an apron and bring 2 plastic bags to take home end products (as they may still be damp).
